Identify What Information You Need

An icon of someone teaching a class of students. Most often your information need will come from a particular assignment you have to do, an essay you have to write, or a presentation you have to give. Your professor may set the question(s), essay topic(s), or presentation topic(s).

  • It's a good idea to pick a topic (when you have the choice), that interests you, that you want to find out more about, and that will keep your attention.

  • If you're having a hard time finding a topic, you can do some background reading or Web searches. General reference sources can help you get started and give you the background of topics. Wikipedia can help in this way. It is ok to use Wikipedia to find a topic and to get the general ideas about a topic, but Wikipedia should not be used as a source -- it is not an academic/scholarly resource appropriate to university study.

  • A great academic alternative to Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia like Credo Reference.
