EAP (English for Academic Purposes) Research Guide

Cite Your Information: Use the Information you Find Responsibly and Ethically

* An essential part of the research process is giving credit to the authors whose books, journal articles, etc., you have used to write your essay or to do your presentation. By citing your sources you avoid any chances of plagiarism.

* You use a citation style system to cite your sources. There are many, many of these citation styles.

* At university, you usually use the citation style system that your professor requires.

* In the EAP Program, we use the APA style, the style of the American Psychological Association.

The APA Citation Style

"Excellence in writing is critical for success in many academic and professional pursuits. APA Style is a set of guidelines for clear and precise scholarly communication that helps authors, both new and experienced, achieve excellence in writing. It is used by millions of people around the world in psychology and also in fields ranging from nursing to social work, communications to education, business to engineering, and other disciplines for the preparation of manuscripts for publication as well as for writing student papers, dissertations, and theses." (Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 2020, p. xvii)

There are aids available to help you to use the APA style for in-text citations as well as for your references list. A great aid is the APA Style Quick Guide to the 7th edition (the most current edition of the APA style).
