Academic Research Skills Guide

Getting started with the Dal libraries

Here are a few tips to help you access everything that the Libraries have to offer. Scroll through this page to view our top 3 tips!

Tip 1: Register your DalCard

  • Your Dal card is your Library Card! Before using your card to borrow materials, you must first register your Dal card as your library card
  • Visit the Library Cards webpage to learn more

Tip 2: Get to know your subject librarian/liaison

  • Each field of study at Dalhousie University has a Subject Liaison to provide support for faculty and students in that area
  • Find your subject librarian from the Subject Liaison Directory
  • Please feel free to contact your librarian whenever you have questions!

Tip 3: Find the Research Guide for your discipline

  • Research Guides contain information, links, recommended databases, and other things you might need for your research
  • Students in different discipline/majors use different tools for their research, so Research Guides are created by librarians to give you a good idea of where to look for information in your discipline/major
  • Some Research Guides may contain specific recommended books or articles, but in most cases Research Guides are gateways to recommended databases and websites that you can use to search for information.
  • Find the guide for your discipline on the list of Research Guides
