Evaluating the Literature - Critical Appraisal

”Critical appraisal is a systematic process used to identify the strengths and weaknesses of a research article in order to assess the usefulness and validity of research findings.” Young, J.M. & Solomon, M.J.

Regardless of impact factor it is important to critically appraise or evalute the information you use. Questions you will want to ask yourself while reading any journal article are:

1. Validity - Are the results Valid?

2. Results - What are the results?

3. Relevance & Applicability - How will these results help me work with my patients or will these results help me answer my question?
