The Faculty of Architecture was established in 1976, and became a part of Dalhousie in 1997
Previously, the School of Architecture had been established in the Nova Scotia Technical College (later TUNS) in 1961
The Master of Urban and Rural Planning program was first offered in 1977, and the Department of Urban and Rural Planning was established in 1978. This became the School of Planning in 2001
The professional architecture program became the first in Canada to receive full accreditation from the Canadian Architecture Certification Board in 2001

Peter Manning was the first Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Planning from 1976–1981. Previously, he was the director of the School of Architecture from 1970–1976
