SUST 1001 Case Study: Country/Region Information

To find background information about a country or region (politics, economy, agriculture, etc...) , you may want to consult some of the following resources:

Europa World Year Book (2-volume set): Provides an overview of the history, economy, political life, major crops, imports/exports, etc... for countries around the world.

The most recent volumes are available at the Killam Library Service Point (Call Number: D 419 E89 2009 REF). Older volumes are on the 4th floor, Killam Library, at the same call number.

EIU Country Profiles
Overviews by country of politics, resources, agriculture and economy provided by the Economist Intelligence Unit.
FAO Country Profiles
After selecting a country, use the links on the left under FAO Core Activities, and Global Issues to view country information and data re. Economic Situation, Agriculture Sector, Biodiversity, etc...
Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
The FAO produces reports and data to help improve agriculture around the world and reduce hunger. Use the site search box on left-hand side of screen to search for documents related to your case study. Some of these may be available online on the FAO site. If this is not the case, try to locate the items by doing a title search in WorldCat. You'll find the WorldCat search box under the "Books" tab of this guide.

Use the search box at upper left to identify recent FAO reports and documents which have been made available online.
FAOSTAT – Production (commodities production)
Crop and livestock statistics on 200 countries - can view by Country or by individual Commodity. Select country and year. Sort by monetary Value or by Quantity.
FAOSTAT - Food Supply
Data by country with regard to the quantity of dietary energy, proteins, and fats provided by the country's food commodities. (Use green menu tabs to view by Crops or by Livestock/Fish).
FAO Nutrition Country Profiles
Select a region from left hand panel. Then select a country. From country page, download full profile from left-hand panel.
FAO Statistical Yearbook
Statistics by country re. Resources (active population in agriculture, land use, tractors, etc), Production, Consumption, Human Welfare (number of undernourished, etc...).
FAO Yearbook. Fishery and Aquaculture Statistics
Capture production and aquaculture production by country and species.

eHRAF (Human Relations Area Files)
eHRAF contains information on various aspects of human societies and cultures around the world, including agricultural activities and traditional food sources.
