Newspapers are NOT scholarly sources. You will need to be mindful of the requirements of your assignment before you choose to cite information that you have read in a newspaper article.
This point aside, newspapers
can serve as an important discovery tool. They may name key individuals or
community groups, identify the titles of reports, provide information about government intiatives or programs, and shed light on
other documents and "grey literature" materials that may exist on your
topic. Once you have uncovered such information, it may then allow you to track down credible materials that are relevant to your topic.
Depending on the newspaper, access may be online or on paper (or even on microfilm depending on the title).
