Information Management (MI)

Welcome! This guide will point you to research resources for a variety of information management topics.

Document Delivery

Document Delivery is the best way to access books and journal articles that aren't available at Dal. With Document Delivery, your requested item will be delivered to you at your chosen Dal library location or electronically through email. Delivery time ranges from 1-3 business days for articles or three business days to one month for books (depending on the location of the holding library).

There are three ways to submit a Document Delivery request.

     1. Novanet Library Catalogue

If the resource you are looking for is not available at Dalhousie but appears in the Novanet catalogue at other libraries, it can be ordered through Novanet Express. You will be emailed when the book is available for pickup.

  • Log in to your library account using your Dal NetID and password.
  • If the resource is available for borrowing, it should have the phrase "Check for available services" in the citation information. Click on this phrase or on the book title.
  • On the resource information page, scroll to the heading "How to get it".
  • Here you should find a "Resource Sharing" link. This link will bring you to a Resource Sharing Request form.
  • Fill out the Resource Sharing Request form to order the item.

     2. Journal Article Databases

If you find a journal article in a database, you can check to see if Dal has access to the article through the Get it @ Dal button. Articles are delivered electronically through email.

  • The Get it @ Dal button should appear in the citation information.
  • Clicking on this button will bring you to a screen with options to access the article.
  • If there is a link to access electronic full text through Dal, click on it. There is no need to complete a Document Delivery request.
  • If there are no options for electronic full text, click the GO button beside Document Delivery.
  • Log in to the Document Delivery form using your Dal card barcode and the last 4 digits of your phone number.
  • Fill out the form to place the Document Delivery order.

     3. Document Delivery Form

If you know the citation information for the item, such as title and author, you can order it through the Document Delivery webpage.

  • Access the Document Delivery webpage through clicking the link above or searching the Dal Libraries website.
  • Click on Patron Request Form, and log in with your Dal card barcode and the last 4 digits of your phone number.
  • Fill in as much information as possible, including further requests such as a "needed by" date.

For more information on any of these methods, watch the Document Delivery video tutorial on the Dalhousie Libraries YouTube channel. Or, if you are a distance student, watch the Document Delivery for Distance Students video.
