Knowledge Management in Knowledge-Intensive Organizations

Re: Knowledge Management in Knowledge-Intensive Organizations: An investigation of factors influencing choices of knowledge management systems

Dear Knowledge Management Professional:

We invite you to take part in a research study being conducted by Joyline Makani who is a graduate student at Dalhousie University, as part of her Interdisciplinary PhD studies. Your participation in this study is voluntary and you may withdraw from the study at any time. Your employment performance evaluation will not be affected by whether or not you participate. The study is described below. This description tells you about the risks, inconvenience, or discomfort which you might experience. Participating in the study might not benefit you, but we might learn things that will benefit others. You should discuss any questions you have about this study with Joyline Makani.

The purpose of this research is to understand what a KIO is, and extend a typology of “knowledge intensive organizations” as a preliminary step to conducting research on these types of organizations. The contribution of this study is to provide a basis of distinguishing KIOs from other organizations, and also to allow researchers to perform comparative organizational analysis. The study will also help researchers identify which of the organizations are knowledge-intense, and the nature of their knowledge-intensity, so that they help these organizations in designing appropriate knowledge management tools. All information you provide will be considered completely confidential; indeed, your name will not be included or in any other way associated with the data collected in the study.  All of the data will be summarized and no individual could be identified from these summarized results. Furthermore, you will not be identified individually in any way in any written reports of this research.  Data collected during this study will be electronically archived after the completion of the study, on a password-protected computer database, for five years after the research study has been completed. Only the student and her supervisor will have access to this data.

You may participate in this study if you consider yourself a knowledge management professional and are familiar with the concept knowledge intensive organization or knowledge intensive firm. The survey will take about 15 minutes of your time. Your participation in this study is voluntary. You may decline to answer any questions that you do not wish to answer and you can withdraw your participation at any time. Additionally, if you begin entering responses to the questionnaire on the Web and then choose not to complete the questionnaire, the information that you have already entered will not be transmitted to us. It is important for you to know that any information that you provide will be confidential. There are no known or anticipated risks to you as a participant in this study.

If you have any questions regarding the study and/or your involvement in it, please feel free to contact Joyline Makani at 902.494.2726.

This research is supervised by Dr. Sunny Marche, Associate Dean, Faculty of Graduate Studies and Professor of Management Information System in the School of Business Administration at Dalhousie University.

If you have any difficulties with, or wish to voice concern about, any aspect of your participation in this study, you may contact Patricia Lindley, Director of Dalhousie University’s Office of Human Research Ethics Administration, for assistance at (902) 494-1462, patricia.lindley@dal.ca

To participate please read the statement in the signature section below and by clicking on “I consent” you acknowledge that you voluntarily agree to be a respondent and you will be automatically taken to the survey available at https://surveys.dal.ca/opinio/s?s=6107

 Thank you for your participation!
