Copyright and Intellectual Property Law

The Copyright Policy Branch of the Department of Canadian Heritage is responsible, through its policy-making activities, for ensuring that Canada's copyright policy framework, a cornerstone of cultural policy, supports creativity, innovation and access to cultural works.

The Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) is a special operating agency of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada. They deliver intellectual property (IP) services in Canada and educate Canadians on how to use IP more effectively.

The mandate of the Board is defined in the Copyright Act. The Act provides that the Board intervenes in three areas, namely approving tariffs for content whose rights are managed by collective societies, the granting of licences for the use of content for which the right owners cannot be found, and arbitration in the event a collective society and users cannot agree on royalties. The Copyright Board of Canada’s fundamental purpose is to establish fair and equitable tariffs and licences through timely and fair processes.

In 2018, the Government of Canada launched a comprehensive Intellectual Property (IP) Strategy to help Canadian businesses, creators, entrepreneurs and innovators understand, protect and access IP. This websites contains resources and tools on IP for the Canadian public.

The goal of the Centre is to understand and explore new perspectives in intellectual property. Drawing upon their Faculty’s strengths in transsystemic education and legal pluralism, they seek to develop a more sophisticated understanding of intellectual property within a transdisciplinary framework of innovation governance.

WIPO Lex provides free of charge access to legal information on intellectual property (IP) from around the world. The WIPO Lex Database is organized into three collections, consisting of IP laws and regulations, WIPO-administered treaties and IP‑related treaties, and IP judgments.
