Gender, Sexuality, and the Law

This journal, founded in 1992, provides a forum for those interested in gender issues and feminist legal studies. In 1998, the Journal expanded its mission to include social policy as well as gender issues. Our current approach reflects our intent to fill a void in legal scholarship by providing an opportunity for academic discussion that is otherwise overlooked by traditional journals. By focusing on gender and social policy issues, we are committed to creating a dialogue among disparate social, economic, and gender groups in order to find our common humanity under the law.

The Australian Feminist Law Journal publishes scholarship on feminist approaches to law and justice, broadly conceived. Founded in 1993, the Australian Feminist Law Journal has been an important intellectual home for feminist legal scholarship from Australia, the Asia Pacific, and beyond. The Journal welcomes high-quality submissions informed by diverse critical and feminist legal traditions, including (but not limited to): cultural and literary, Indigenous, post/de-colonial, critical race, Marxist, queer, psychoanalytic, political economy, post-structuralist, and socio-legal approaches. The Journal encourages submissions that: centre the voices and experiences of women (including trans women and gender diverse and non-binary people); offer broad feminist and/or gender-based analyses of laws, legal institutions, and socio-legal issues; and embrace a materially and structurally grounded intersectional analytical sensibility.

Founded in 1985, the same year that the equality guarantee of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms came into force, the Canadian Journal of Women and the Law publishes ground-breaking, multi-disciplinary scholarship on the impact of law on women’s social, economic, and legal status.

Feminist Legal Studies is committed to an international perspective and to the promotion of feminist work in all areas of law, legal theory and legal practice. The journal publishes material in a range of formats, including articles, essay reviews, interviews, book reviews and notes on recent legal developments. The editorial board encourages the submission of papers from people working outside the academy, as well as from researchers in any discipline. The journal publishes critical, interdisciplinary, theoretically engaged feminist scholarship relating to law (broadly conceived). It has a particular interest in work that extends feminist debates and analysis by reference to critical and theoretical approaches and perspectives.

Founded in 1977 and currently on the 46th volume, the Harvard Journal of Law and Gender (originally the Harvard Women’s Law Journal) is the nation’s oldest continuously publishing feminist law journal. JLG is an intersectional feminist publication, devoted to the advancement of feminist jurisprudence and the study of law and gender. It seeks to clarify legal issues that have gendered aspects and implications, confront new challenges to full social equality, and explore the interconnections between race, class, sexuality, nationality, ability, and gender in the law.

The International Journal of Discrimination and the Law encompasses wide range of areas of discrimination including racism and sex discrimination, the treatment of asylum-seekers and refugees, issues of immigration and nationality, discrimination on grounds disability, sexual or political orientation, age and ill-health, in relation to access to employment, housing, education and other services.

The Minnesota Journal of Law & Inequality was founded in 1981 under the direction of Professor Catharine MacKinnon as the law school’s second legal journal. The editors sought to provide a forum for the development of legal scholarship and pedagogy that analyzes how the law perpetuates systemic oppression, exploitation, and discrimination. From the Journal’s inception in 1981 to September of 2020, the Journal was known as “Law & Inequality: A Journal of Theory and Practice.”

Founded in 1991, the Tulane Journal of Law & Sexuality: A Review of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity in the Law is the first student-edited law review in the country devoted solely to covering legal issues of interest to the LGBTQ+ community. The Journal is also the official legal journal of the National LGBT Bar Association. To fully address the legal developments impacting the LGBTQ+ community, the Journal publishes on a wide range of topics, including constitutional, employment, family, health, military, and insurance law. The Journal publishes works by academicians, practitioners, and students that take theoretical and practical approaches to analyzing those issues, and many more. Published annually, the Journal has broad national and international circulation.

Founded in 1996, the Journal explores how we are classified, stratified, ignored, and singled out under the law because of our race, sex, gender, economic class, ability, sexual identity, and the multitude of labels applied to us. Identity is a matrix of experiences; when the law fails to recognize any one facet of our identity, both the law and the person lose invaluable dimension. Our challenge is to examine how we negotiate our identities, how the legal system negotiates them for us and how these negotiations affect our ability to attain justice.
